Fluoride treatment at Southern Village Pediatric Dentistry is an important part of your child’s dental health. Fluoride is proven to significantly decrease cavities by integrating into the enamel (outer layer) of the tooth to make it more resistant to acid and decay.
Types of Fluoride
Topical fluoride is applied directly to the tooth, and helps from the outside to make enamel stronger.
Systemic fluoride is typically taken in through city water or a fluoride supplement, and is incorporated into the tooth structure as the tooth is forming, strengthening from the inside.
Fluoride treatment in our Chapel Hill pediatric dental office will give your child the correct dosage for the health of their teeth. In-office fluoride is applied after your child’s cleaning every six months.
If we determine that your child would benefit from additional fluoride, we will recommend fluoride treatment for home use. We do not recommend using a fluoride treatment other than toothpaste without consulting Dr. Hardin or Dr. Shauna first.
When choosing a fluoride toothpaste, always check for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products marked with the ADA seal of approval have been carefully examined and approved by the ADA based on safety and effectiveness.
